There are thousands of couples in Minnesota who lack the ability to
marry. It impacts virtually every aspect of our lives, our finances, our ability
to visit each other in times of sickness and to make decisions for our loved
ones in times of death. We don't want to wait five years, ten years, twenty
years to see equality for same-gender couples in Minnesota. Many of us
cannot afford to wait that long. That is why Marry Me Minnesota is
organizing a landmark lawsuit against the state of Minnesota.

Marry Me Minnesota is an all-volunteer organization that exists solely to
challenge Minnesota laws against the right of same-gender couples to
marry. Our organization was founded by a group of same-gender families
who live day-to-day with the government’s discrimination and we came
together because it is up to us to make the change we seek. We cannot
afford to rely on someone else.

Marry Me Minnesota has retained legal representation to begin the task of
overturning a 40 year old legal precedent.  Minnesota was the site of the
first same-gender marriage lawsuit in the nation, and that brave gay couple
in 1971 lost their case. Marry Me Minnesota believes that 40 years is too
long for that precedent to remain unchallenged, and that the best time to
fight for our civil rights is always now.

The lawsuit against the state will also challenge the state's Defense of
Marriage Act, which was passed in 1997. This law, among other things,
prohibits the state from recognizing same-gender marriages obtained in
other jurisdictions. Overturning this law would make it possible to have out-
of-state same-gender marriages recognized as legal here in Minnesota. At
the very least, this lawsuit could mean that those who married in other states
would have full marriage rights in Minnesota.

Dear Supporter of Marriage Equality,

You will not see any fancy, professional fundraising campaigns from
Marry Me Minnesota. This is about it. The money that you are
generous enough to contribute goes to supporting the case
.

Marry Me Minnesota is all volunteer. Most of the work of this
organization
, including: administration, accounting, fundraising and
public relations
is done by the actual plaintiffs in the case. This website
is designed, created and paid for by the plaintiffs, themselves.

Our hope is that you will recognize the potential of this landmark case
to bring equality to same-gender families in Minnesota and that you
will contribute to help make that happen. Thank you.

*Our marriage equality lawsuit was filed in Hennepin County District Court on May 11, 2010.

*Plaintiffs are three same-sex couples and the infant child of one couple.

*Our lawsuit demands that the government immediately begin issuing marriage licenses to
same-sex couples.

*The Minnesota Attorney General has indicated her intention to move that our case be
dismissed.

*We are currently waiting for
the opportunity to present our case for equality, in court.
